What happens when power is held by one person or a small group of people?
When there are no checks, no balances and no separation of power?
Firstly, the powers of the judiciary, executive and legislature will generally fall under the command of a single authority. This single authority then effectively has the ability to make and enforce any law or take any action it wants with few limitations and no one to stop them. When the judiciary is under the control of the Executive and Legislature, it becomes an extension of the Executive branch.
Secondly, when there are no checks on the lawmaker (Legislature) or those that apply the law (Executive) laws can be made without scrutiny or due consideration.
Where there is unchecked powers there is more likely corruption and certainly no protection of human rights. Those in power will more often use whatever means they can to retain their power, to reward their supporters, punish or silence opponents and to divert public property for their own private ends. This may include violence, intimidation, arbitrary arrests, outlawing any opposition, confiscating property, silencing the media and free speech, changing election laws, influencing court cases, rigging government tenders etc
This is why Australians must value the concept of the separation of powers, and must ensure checks and balances are not eroded. Without these protections, are freedoms and rights will be lost.
