The Government Job Profile Activity

Approximately 60 minutes

Writing Task

You will write three creative job profiles as if you are creating a career guide for students interested in how the Australian government works. Each profile will describe the responsibilities, powers, and limitations of one of the following:

  • The Legislature

  • The Executive

  • The Judiciary

Instructions

Step 1: Understand the Roles

For each of the roles above, you need to write a job advertisement. To do this, you will need to understand what each arm of government does and what powers it has.

Step 2: Write Your Job Profiles

For each of these three government bodies, write a short “job listing” that includes:

  • Job Title

  • Who Can Apply

  • What Makes This Role Unique

  • Where Their Power Comes From

  • Who They Keep in Check

  • Who Checks Their Power

Use clear, informative language. Imagine you’re writing for a government careers website for young people. If you need to see what a job advertisement looks like, you can use seek to find a position description. Use the terms policy officer, magistrate or judge to help you.

Step 3: Add a Creative Element (Optional)

Include a fun detail like:

  • A “day in the life” scenario

  • A sample job interview question

  • A cartoon character version of each role

  • Interview each other for the role
