What is the Rule of Law?

Poster: Rule of Law Inverse Pyramid

A healthy democracy relies on many elements to uphold the rule of law and protect human rights. These include known and accessible laws, open and free criticism of the laws and those in administration, fair and prompt trials, an independent and impartial judiciary, checks and balances including the separation of powers, laws made openly and transparently by the people, free and fair elections and an informed and engaged citizenry.

When any of these elements are weakened— whether through corruption, erosion of judicial independence, suppression of dissent, or exclusion of certain groups from the democratic process—the foundations of democracy begin to crumble. This erosion can destabilise democratic institutions, paving the way for authoritarianism, lawlessness, or dictatorial rule. This not only undermines public trust in government but also threatens the rights and freedoms that democracy is meant to protect.
