The Rule of Law Institute of Australia (RoLIA) is delighted to announce the appointment of Kate Burns as its new Chief Executive Officer. Kate will lead the Institute’s initiatives and educational programs and promote the importance of the rule of law in Australia.

For the last 7 years Kate has been Special Counsel and Senior Solicitor, Community Law Team at the Crown Solicitor’s Office. There she undertook complex litigation advice work in the areas of public immunity, anti-discrimination and charitable trusts. This involved her supervising and training solicitors.

Prior to that, Kate lectured at the University of New South Wales, Macquarie University and the University of Sydney, where she was the assistant University Solicitor. She has also worked as a senior lawyer at both the Office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, Sydney, and the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Kate has written extensively. Her latest conference paper was in 2012 on “The Disability Act Twenty Years On”. She has prepared submissions to Parliamentary and Department inquiries and committees on draft legislation.

This year she is teaching legal ethics part-time at the University of New South Wales. We are sure that Kate will bring tremendous experience and skill to the role of Chief Executive Officer.
